Week of December 2

Welcome Back!

Math: We took a math test today (Tuesday) and overall, it went pretty well. We will be relearning some of the concepts that were tricky and need some extra attention. We start a new unit tomorrow and will take the test just before Christmas Break.

Writing: We are working on revising our essays to make them better. Then, next week, we'll start with a new prompt and see if we can increase our scores right from the start.

Social Studies: We're starting to read some Greek Mythology. Very fun and interesting.

Science: We're taking a little break from science rotations and will do some things together as a class. We'll start up rotations again after the break - to Mrs. Sorenson's to learn about the universe and solar system.

Reading: DRA testing will start up again in January when we get back from break. So, we'll be working hard on reading fluently and answering questions about the non-fiction texts we read.

Any questions? Let me know!

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

We've only got one more day.

Science: This is our last week with Miss Cook's class. We may or may not start a new rotation before Christmas.

Social Studies: We'll finish building Rome tomorrow! Your students have been working so hard and it looks great! We'll hopefully be able to display this masterpiece in the hall or the library, so if you're in the school sometime in the next couple of weeks, drop in and take a look.

Math: Your students WILL have math homework over the break, but just one assignment. We'll be taking a test the day after they get back, so I'd like to help them remember as much as they can over the break.

Writing: We are finishing up our first argumentative paper. Overall, I'm very pleased with the hard work of each your students. We have a lot to work on, but they are doing very well.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving! We'll see you next week!

Let's make it a great week!

Reading: We are reading Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli together as a class. We are loving it!

Writing: We will hopefully finish up our argumentative papers this week and have them graded by online writing programs. It's our first argumentative paper, so it's tricky, but your kids are trying hard.

Math: Math test TODAY! It's been a hard chapter, we will be revisiting it all year long to make sure everyone has solidified the information. Tomorrow we start a unit on Converting Units of Measure.

Science: Moon Phases with Miss Cook

Social Studies: We are building ROME! The kids are really getting into it.

Report Cards will come home with students on Friday afternoon.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Week of November 10

It's finally feeling like Fall outside!

Here we are at another week.

Math: We will be finishing up our unit with percents. It's tricky stuff. Parents, if you can check on your students each night and make sure they've tried their very hardest on their homework before coming to school. Struggling through these problems is usually the most helpful thing for students.

Science: Moon Phases with Miss Cook

Reading: We started Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli this week. We will be enjoying his and working on our own creative figurative language.

Writing: We are working on an argumentative paper this week. Should Cheerleading Be Considered A Sport? Students are reading opposing articles, choosing which side they'd like to argue and then backing their claim up with evidence from the texts.

Social Studies: We will be building ROME this week! Students will be in groups and should get their assignments today or tomorrow. I have materials here for them, but any materials brought from home to help build are welcome.

The term ends THIS FRIDAY. I will be submitting grades Thursday night and cannot be changed after that. If your student has missing assignments (they will know if they do, or you can look on Skyward), the MUST be in by Thursday at 3:30.

I will be sending home some extra credit assignments with students who have all their work turned in that would like to boost their grades a little bit. This is all also due by Thursday at 3:30.

As always, students can come in before and after school for help. I'm always here. :)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!
We're going to have such a fun week!

Math: We will be taking a test ON Halloween. It's a crazy day, but I am confident that your students will be ready for it and can do very well.

Social Studies: We are talking about ROME. The kids are so interested in it! We'll be getting into some projects with it next week.

Science: Miss Cook is teaching seasons and will be moving into Moon Phases soon.

Writing: We are finishing up hooks before Halloween and next week we will start reading articles that will help make claims for an argumentative essay.

Halloween: If you are interested in helping or donating to the Halloween Party, let me know. Our room mom, Jennifer Ball, has been contacting people, but if for some reason you're not on that list and would like to help, I'm sure we can find something for you to do!

The parade is in the morning from 9:30-10:30. Parents, please go to the gym. The kids will be parading through so you can see their costumes.

Our class party will be after lunch at 12:30. We will be combined with the rest of sixth grade in rotations until 1:45, and then we will finish up in our own room for the rest of the day.

Front Row Ed: If your student can not get on FrontRow Ed at home, let me know. I will be assigning FrontRow Ed homework here and there, and it's good for me to know if your students doesn't have access to it at home.
An App can be downloaded on iPads for, but unfortunately not iPhones. It's just called "Front Row".

Extra Help: If your student it struggling in anything and would like any extra help, I am available! They can always come in before or after school.

Week of October 21

Welcome back from Fall Break!
I hope you had a great long weekend.

We are diving right back into everything!

Math: We will continue our work with Ratios and take a Mid-Chapter Check-In in Friday.

Social Studies: Your students gave fabulous presentations on Mummies last week to wrap up our unit on Egypt. It was fun to see them research, work together, and present.
We are starting our unit on Rome this week! Lots of talk about government and what a republic is.

Science: The sixth grade just started their rotation in science. My students are now going to Miss Cook's class Tuesday - Friday for about 35 minutes. She is teaching them about The Seasons and The Moon Phases. Very exciting!

Writing: This week we will be exploring the use of really good "hooks" at the beginning of an essay. This is a big part of writing that we will be working on all year.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Week of October 6

Last full week of school before Fall Break!

Happy Monday!

This week we will be finishing up our Heat unit and taking a test at the end of the week of what we've learned so far in science. We will be reviewing together as a class and I will also give the students a study guide that they can study at home.

Because we always seem to run out of time on Fridays to take the Spelling test, I have decided that Spelling pre-tests will now be on Tuesdays with the test the next Monday. We took a test today and we will take a pre-test tomorrow.

We will be taking a math test either Thursday or Friday this week. The next two days (after confusing everyone) and seeing how much review we need before the test will determine when we test.

If you will be out of town before and/or after Fall Break, please have your students come to me BEFORE they you leave. I can give them some things to do while they're gone, so we don't have as much to catch up with when they leave.

Thanks for all your support! It was great to meet with you last week. :)

Week of September 29

Hello Parents and Students!

And here we are on another Monday!

We had a spelling pre-test today, we will have the post-test on Friday. The words are tricky. Practice at home would be ideal.

Math this week has been pretty easy for most if not all of the students. We are just working with integers and negative numbers. The only worry that I have is that students will not read directions carefully and will get easy questions wrong. Parents, please encourage them to SLOW DOWN and read the question all the way through. Students, SLOW DOWN and you'll get it right. :)

Science we will be finishing up our unit on Light and begin a short unit on Heat.

I have given the students of a couple of packets to complete in class this week: one for handwriting, and one grammar packet on independent and dependent clauses. Both of these packets are due by Friday. I will give them time in class to complete them, but if they are not done by Thursday, I recommend that they go home to be finished. Late work does not receive full credit.

SEPs are on Wednesday and Thursday! I hope to see everyone there. I will send home reminders tomorrow with each student. If you didn't sign up for a time, I just filled you in one of the empty slots. Please be prompt so that we don't get behind. I will do my very best to stay on time with everyone's visits.

Let's make it a great week!

Week of September 15

Hello Parents and Students!
Happy Monday!

Here are a couple of things going on this week:
I meant to have the spelling post-test on Friday of last week, but we ran out of time. So the spelling post-test was today. We will have a pre-test tomorrow for this weeks words and the post-test on Friday. Then we will be back on track to always have pre-tests on Mondays and post-tests on Fridays.
Math this week is all about dividing fractions. We're trying hard to use pictures and full sentences to represent every problem. This is new for most students and will be a challenge for most if not all. Know that homework may be difficult, but we will work our hardest in class together to succeed.

Students presented their homemade musical instruments today! It was so fun! You have very creative children! We have had a lot of fun learning about sound. This week we will move into learning about light. Hopefully I will be able to post some pictures and video of your talented children. Students who forgot or did not complete the assignment can turn it in for partial credit tomorrow.

I'm trying hard to keep grades updated on Skyward, so take a look. Students should get with me if they have any missing assignments and we'll see what we can work out.

Please click on the Calendar tab at the top of this page. I have put together a calendar with all homework assignments and any in class assignments that need to be made up. If your student is absent or sick, please take a look at this. I have a hard copy of it in the classroom for the students to access as well. This is also a great place to go if students forget their homework assignments.

 Thanks!
